School 4 Lovers
“School 4 Lovers” is a fresh adaption of the classic Mozart opera Così fan tutte. This bold project reinterprets the 18th century opera to create a musical performance fired by hip hop style and culture.
Momi Inc has collaborated on this production as advisor to the creative and production teams. School 4 Lovers is a co-production between Glyndebourne Education (East Sussex) and the Finnish National Opera (Helsinki).
School 4 Lovers opened to rave reviews in the national press. In the UK The Times, the Independent and the Financial Times all awarded 4 stars to the production on it's opening night at Glyndebourne in March 06. There has been a strong response from audience and press in Finland and Estonia where the show was performed in June 06.
“That this hip-hop reinvention of Mozart's opera tapped into its tenderness, violence, passion and despair more powerfully than almost any Così I‚ve seen was testimony to its success. With 18 young Brighton teenagers involved on stage, School 4 Lovers is an extremely classy act. …
The notion of morphing Mozart into the voice of an inner-city prophet seemed risky in the extreme. But it has worked. And the sheer virtuosity of those metamorphoses in the musical arrangements of Charlie “The Baptist” Parker and Jonathan Gill is striking, sometimes breathtaking.
The updated story has spawned a text from Stephen Plaice that Mozart would have relished…”
Hilary Finch at The Times ( 20th March 2006)
